A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. If people believe in themselves, it's amazing what they can accomplish. Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude be kind, but not weak be bold, but not bully be thoughtful, but not lazy be humble, but not timid be proud, but not arrogant have humor, but without folly. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go, but ought to be. A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader's courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position. A good general not only sees the way to victory he also knows when victory is impossible. The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority. It's got to be a vision you articulate clearly and forcefully on every occasion. The very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision. The art of leadership is saying no, not saying yes. So much of what we call management consists in making it difficult for people to work. People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Men make history and not the other way around. When I give a minister an order, I leave it to him to find the means to carry it out. You lead by going to that place and making a case. You don't lead by pointing and telling people some place to go. Theodore RooseveltĢ5. Leadership is influence. The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it. A great person attracts great people and knows how to hold them together. Anyone can hold the helm when the sea is calm. Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked leadership is defined by results not attributes. I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers. Sign up here to get top career advice delivered straight to your inbox every week.Ģ0. I ended the year with a few days at Joshua Tree National Park with my son and just got home in time to join some friends for New Year’s Eve tonight. I am looking forward to so much more of that in 2024! I missed life drawing most of the year, but joined a totally fantastic session with the Bay Area Models Guild at the end of the year and plan to go more often in 2024.Īnd this is the year a bunch of you joined me for monthly sketching sessions on zoom where we made art together and learned so much from each other. It was another year in which my sketching family turned up for me, keeping me on track, reminding me it was time to go sketch the iris before they were gone, or spending days together experimenting with new materials. I had an unplanned 2-week trip to Morocco to teach a workshop in October, which was quite an adventure!Īnd I came home and did a demo with Sketch View World Tour which you can watch here.Īnd I finally wrote that post about my sketchkit here. I still find it strange that she’s not home. It was a very special trip that I will remember for a long time!Ĭome September, and kid #1 left for college at UC Davis. I spent 4 weeks in the summer traveling wiht my kids in Europe. The upside of crazy rain in February and March? A superbloom in April and May! Every night was another motel that looked just like the previous one! We did a week of driving with stops from Arizona, to So Cal, Central Coast, and then back home. In April, I took my daughter to check out colleges so she could decide which one to go to. I have no evidence to show for it, but I can tell you it was quite eye-opening to look at my portraits of people on the stand and see how much of my thoughts could be read in them. I served on a Grand Jury this year, for 4 weeks, and through all the days of the trials, I sketched everything that I saw and heard into a sketchbook I knew I could never photograph or take out of court. It was a year of bizarre weather, of waking up to heavy snow in all the mountains around San Jose In February (You have to live here to know how strange that is) and storms pulling down huge trees all through March. This is the year I had the honor of being a Creative Ambassador to the City of San Jose, leading sketchwalks around the city all year round. This one was pretty action-packed, starting with a winter break in Hawaii, followed within a week by my first workshop in India in January. Thank you for coming along for the ride for yet another year. The primary differences are in two areas - technology and usage. GPS surveying uses similar technology to nearly any other GPS application - however, how surveyors use GPS differs significantly. Leading Expertise For Your 3D Modeling Needs In combination with other surveying equipment, like the Total Station, GPS technology provides valuable information for surveyors to help develop plans and models for client projects. Surveying was one of the first commercial adaptations for GPS for its ability to obtain latitudes and longitudes without the need for measuring distances and angles between points. It’s particularly useful for the surveying industry. While most people are familiar with GPS and have used it to some degree on their smartphones or car navigation systems, GPS is a powerful tool for commercial applications. No matter the weather conditions or time, GPS can triangulate the signal and provide a location. If the receiver is moving, continuous data collection can be used to calculate the changing position of the receiver over time, which can be used to calculate speed. The information collected from these satellites then calculates the latitude, longitude and height of the receiver. When a receiver requests data to calculate its location, four or more GPS satellites will communicate with the receiver, sending the position of the satellite, the time the data was transmitted and the distance between the satellite and the receiver. GPS uses a network of satellites, which communicate with receivers on the ground. Since then, it has expanded its use to consumer and commercial applications. GPS was first developed for military use starting in the 1970s and became fully operational in 1993. In short, GPS, or the global positioning system, is a satellite-based navigation system. To understand the GPS surveying process, you need to understand what GPS is. Decoding GPS Surveying: An Introductory Overview Despite the widespread usage of GPS technology in surveying, however, it’s not a topic many know about - that’s why we’re here to explain the GPS surveying basics. Today, surveying professionals rely on GPS to provide accurate and reliable data for clients across a wide range of industries and applications. In fact, the surveying industry was one of the first to utilize GPS technology, recognizing the potential benefits of the technology. Surveying has changed substantially over the years - what used to take months of observation, measurement and geometrical calculations now takes a few hours or days thanks to the introduction of GPS technology. This removes any conflicting ideas that family members may have about your last wishes that may be a major point of contention among those who loved you most.įurther, certain types of accounts can be established so as to automatically transfer ownership to the designated heir upon your death. Leaving a will, living trust, or irrevocable trust, allows you to provide direction to your family when you aren’t there. It’s no secret that money can cause heirs of your estate to become greedy at worst, and misdirected at best. When you correctly plan an estate, you choose which assets go where, how much is paid to whom, and effectively remove much of the “guesswork” that goes along with dealing with the death of a loved one. With 1 in 4 Americans seeing estate planning as a greater need due to inflation, it's no surprise that planning for the future will help your family feel safer amidst economic uncertainty.Ĭonsidering the matter from a tax perspective, making strategic decisions now will help those who matter most have more financial support when they need it most. One of the pillars of successful estate planning isn’t related to taxes, financials, or legal strategies: it is simply taking care of those you love. In addition to ensuring financial security and wealth distribution for your loved ones, estate planning offers two key benefits: ensuring your family is taken care of and mitigating family disputes. This means that the shape after the cut is the same as the starting shape. The total volume of trapezoidal footing, V V’ + V. For instance, when a plane cuts through a square pyramid along the same direction as its base, the cross-section will also be a square. If a prism is intersected by a plane parallel to its base, the resulting cross-section will match the shape of the base. In simpler terms, you can think of it as cutting a 3D object with a flat plane to create a different shape. Cross Section of a PrismĪ cross-section forms when a 3D object is sliced by a plane along its axis. Consequently, a prism can have square, rectangular, pentagonal, and other polygonal shapes, but it cannot take on a circular form. The shape of the prism is devoid of curves. The cross-section resembles a triangle, thus it is named as a triangular prism. Shape of PrismĪ prism has a solid shape consisting of two identical ends (such as triangles, squares, rectangles, etc.), having flat faces or surfaces and maintaining a uniform cross-section across its length. Many everyday objects represent different types of prisms. For example, a hexagonal prism looks like a metallic nut and a rectangular prism is similar to a fish tank. Prisms are named based on their cross-sections. The other faces of a prism are called lateral faces and they have the same shape all along their length, but it doesn’t have curved faces. It is important to note, however, that these theories are insufficient for the greater understanding of intergenerational IPV. The pathway to IPV perpetration or victimization based on the social environmental theories begins with early exposure to violence. Social theories that focus on the social environment the individual is surrounded with is crucial to understand because of humans are social beings the social aspect of relationships cannot be taken away from the progression of IPV. Finally, I will discuss the interactions between genes and the environment and their significant influences on intergenerational IPV pathways. For the biological framework, the pathway to IPV perpetration or victimization of the individual begins with a gene or a physiological condition. However, biologically related families also share genes, so biological factors, such as cognitive functions, neurochemical functions, psychophysiological functions, and genes must also be taken into account. For this type of framework, the pathway to IPV perpetration or victimization begins with early exposure to violence. First, I will explain the dominating literature about intergenerational IPV, which focuses on social theories, such as the Social Learning Theory and the Attachment Theory, which purely attribute intergenerational IPV perpetration and victimization later in life to environmental factors. The purpose of this paper is to identify the starting factors that activate the cascade of conditions that lead to or continue the intergenerational IPV cycle and to argue that neither the social environmental factors nor the biological factors can explain this phenomenon alone the combination of the gene and environment interactions show the most predisposition for IPV perpetration and victimization. To create beneficial interventions for these victims, the nature of the intergenerational cycle of IPV must be understood. A troubling but consistent finding in the existing research is that IPV tends to “run in the family.” 2 Families are usually private, which makes it more difficult for society to provide effective interventions for victims of IPV when the perpetrator is their husband or their wife. Based on the Center for Disease Control (CDC) definition, intimate partner violence encompasses “physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, or psychological aggression (including coercive acts) by a current or former intimate partner, whether or not the partner is a spouse.” 1 This form of violence in society is underreported by victims for various reasons that could range from not wanting to be publicly shamed to not wanting to report someone they love. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health problem that leads to grave biological and psychological consequences for victims and families in diverse ways. This paper seeks to identify the major beginning points of the various pathways that lead to intimate violence perpetration and victimization by highlighting the social environmental factors, as well as the biological factors and assesses whether one kind of factor could be the sole indicator of IPV without the other. Because it is a cycle, the beginning of the pathway of violence may be hard to target. IPV however, is an intergenerational cycle genetic and biological factors cannot be ignored in IPV perpetration and victimization. Existing literature on this issue predominantly focuses on the social environment, leaning towards theories that put blame on the social environment the victims are bound to. Intimate partner violence is historically viewed as a social and private phenomenon, tinged with shame and stigma. Although interventions may be continuously designed to combat this problem, IPV must first be understood in an intergenerational perspective before effective programs can be put into place. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious public health issue that results in social, psychological, emotional, and physical consequences. |
